Research title: A diet tracking application for early AMD patients

Supervisors: Daisy Y. Shu, Sara Grafenauer

Abstract

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of blindness in individuals aged 55 years and over (1, 2). AMD is classified into early, intermediate and late stages. The management for early AMD is dietary advice and smoking cessation. There is currently no standardised method of monitoring early AMD adherence to an AMD diet in Australia. Here an application, 鈥渁pp鈥, is proposed for early AMD patients to track their diet, ensuring that it meets AMD dietary guidelines. A similar app has been found to be feasible (3). Having dietary data in the app will allow optometrists and nutritionists to monitor patients diet and provide advice, encouragement and feedback to patients.

The app will include food that contains nutrients important in eye health, being Zinc, Copper, Lutein + Zeaxanthin, Omega-3, Vitamins E and C and Protein. Patients will input their diet and will be given a score. They will be warned if their eye health is low. The app will be available via the web, Android and IOS and will be available for free.
