Sidney Washburn

Master of Philosophy Candidate
Â鶹Éçmadou Water Research Laboratory

Sidney joined the Water Research Laboratory as a Master’s candidate in August 2024 to evaluate shoreline variability in northwestern Alaska using remote sensing imagery through CoastSat.

Her research focuses on assessing CoastSat’s performance for long-term shoreline change analysis in Arctic regions, particularly its ability to map coastlines in areas with persistent snow and ice cover and limited satellite data. Sidney aims to identify necessary enhancements to improve CoastSat’s reliability in such environments, and to investigate dominant patterns of shoreline change in Alaska from 1985 to the present, in relation to environmental and geomorphological drivers.

Sidney holds a Bachelor of Science in Geology from the University of Florida, with a longstanding interest in earth sciences and coastal hazards.
