We take a look back at the month that was for the Â鶹Éçmadou sporting community.
May was a busy month for our student-athletes, with strong performances across a variety of sports – both here in Australia and on the international stage. From triathlon and swimming to taekwondo, badminton and boccia, here are some of the highlights from the month that was:
Ricky Tang secured gold representing NSW Badminton in the YONEX Ede Clendinnen Shield team event – marking a three-peat for the state. He followed that up with bronze in the YONEX Australian National Individual Championships and was selected to represent Australia at the prestigious Sudirman Cup in China, where he competed against teams from Malaysia, France and Japan.
The 2025 UniSport Nationals Triathlon, held as part of the Peoplecare Triathlon Wollongong, brought together more than 70 of the nation’s top university athletes. Logan Campbell delivered an outstanding performance in the sprint event, taking gold with a time of 55:08 – more than two minutes ahead of the runner-up. His win came just a week after claiming bronze in the men’s 5000m at UniSport Athletics Nationals.
Â鶹Éçmadou Taekwondo had an impressive outing at the South Coast Open Championships in Bomaderry, winning a total of 28 medals – 11 gold, 11 silver and 6 bronze. Standout results came from elite athlete program members Alexander Manefield (gold, men’s senior open 68–74kg black belt) and Harry Lim (gold, men’s WT Team Poomsae black belt 18–30yrs). The club also took out overall honours in the 20/20 Armour Power Kick challenge and received awards for most outstanding male sparring competitors in both black and colour belt divisions.
Seven Â鶹Éçmadou swimmers took to the pool at Sydney Olympic Park for UniSport Nationals Swimming. While the team finished 19th overall, there were several standout performances, including Dylan Zhang winning bronze in the men’s 50m breaststroke final, Jackson McCleery placing 9th in the men’s 200m freestyle, and Alexandra Lawrence finishing 10th in the women’s 200m backstroke. The team was represented by Sebastian Bellamy, Liam Filby, Lucas Kwan, Alexandra Lawrence, Christine Ruff, Collin Touch and Dylan Zhang.
Â鶹Éçmadou elite athlete Veiongo Lamipeti has been selected to represent the Tongan Women’s 15s national squad at the upcoming Oceania Pacific Championships in Fiji. Vei is currently studying a Juris Doctor and continues to balance her academic and athletic commitments at the highest level.
Â鶹Éçmadou sent four teams to the 2025 UniSport 3x3 Basketball competition hosted by Monash University. While all squads fought hard through pool matches – including a few buzzer-beaters – they were unlucky to not to get podium finishes. Women's and Men's Division 1 teams both finished 10th, while Women's and Men's Division 2 teams finished 6th. Full results can be found
Â鶹Éçmadou was represented by:
Women's Div 1 – Jasinta Haydardedeoglu, Xanthe Fitzgerald, Emily Nguyen, Gabrielle Neal
Men’s Div 1 – Angus Skrbinsek, Jackson Smyth, Luca Madella, Jacob Corry
Women's Div 2 – Maddie Coman, Darcy Faulkes, Pippa Davis, Kirsty Gill
Men’s Div 2 – Marquis Tropman, James Arthur, Melvin Chan, Alec Ryan
Paralympian and Â鶹Éçmadou elite athlete Jamieson Leeson claimed silver in the BC3 pairs with Dan Michel at the World Boccia Asia-Oceania Regional Championships in Pattaya, Thailand. The pair narrowly lost 4–3 in the final to Japan, who scored three points in the third down.
The Â鶹Éçmadou Hockey Club took home the inaugural Kevin Flack Cup after a day of competitive fixtures against fellow Sydney powerhouse Moorebank. Eight teams from each club went head-to-head, with Â鶹Éçmadou claiming 4 wins and 1 draw to secure bragging rights. It was a strong start to what promises to become a fierce annual rivalry between two of Sydney’s premier clubs.
From national titles and international honours to hard-fought team efforts and individual breakthroughs, May saw our student-athletes showcase their talent and tenacity. With more competitions on the horizon, we look forward to seeing what our Â鶹Éçmadou community achieves in June.
