CVMM Rising Star: Dr Carmen Zhang
Driving discovery in cardiovascular research and inflammation therapy
Driving discovery in cardiovascular research and inflammation therapy
Tell us a bit about yourself!Â
I am a postdoctoral fellow with a strong interest in cardiovascular research and a special interest in myocardial infarction. I am constantly searching for opportunities to expand my knowledge and present my work, including attending conferences and research workshops.
What’s your research all about, and what’s the most exciting part for you?
My research interest lies in the mechanisms that cause cardiovascular disease and the development of future therapies, particularly potential anti–inflammatory related treatments. My research focuses on understanding the pathogenesis of heart disease and developing novel treatment options to slow disease progression and promote the regression of established disease. I am also evaluating the ability of a new anti-inflammatory peptide to decrease I/R injury and cardiac remodelling after myocardial infarction.Â
Is there a recent achievement that you’d like to share?
Jingjing Li (another CVMM ECR member from the Graduate School of biomedical engineering) and I received the CVMM grant last year for our new collaboration.
As an ECR, what’s been one of your biggest challenges, and how did you tackle it?Â
As an ECR, the biggest challenge is striking a balance between career development and research focus. Research careers are an ongoing process of learning, including grant writing, participation in the research community and mentoring. These can take up a lot of time to develop the related skills and require support from others. Â This can impact the actual research input.
What activities keep you inspired and energised?Â
I am always inspired and getting new ideas from conferences and meetings.
