Improve the Teaching & Learning tools

Â鶹Éçmadou has updated and improved the  to ensure courses are accessible for students. This includes:

  1. Design the online learning environment to guide and support student learning
  2. Ensure online content can be accessed by assistive technology
  3. Provide text alternatives for media
  4. Design for the various ways learners access and engage with online content
  5. Make iterative improvements

Â鶹Éçmadou has rolled out a (UDL) education program and resources for teaching staff to implement in their courses. This guide assists teaching staff with improving the learning experience and outcomes for all students, including students with disabilities, diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds, mature students and international students.

Improving educational systems and supporting indigenous students with disability

Â鶹Éçmadou has continued with the implementation of Simplicity Access, the Student Disability Management System, to support improved and streamlined support services for students. This system is a portal for staff to use and provides information on:

  • The reasonable adjustments of ELS students.
  • Equitable Learning Plans (ELPs).
  • Resources and guides that support a student’s educational adjustments.

In response to identifying an additional registration process and potential barrier for Indigenous students, Equitable Learning Services (ELS) have been working with Nura Gili. ELS and Nura Gili have been working together to offer appointments for Indigenous students with no need to go through the regular registration process (reducing the barriers of additional registration processes). As well as offering assessments for adjustments to pre-program students. This has positively impacted subsequent registration figures with ELS.

Improve workplace adjustments for staff

  1. Â鶹Éçmadou has updated the Workplace adjustments procedure. This procedure outlines the process for requesting, implementing and reviewing workplace adjustments.
  2. A for managers and staff has also been developed. This toolkit provides further guidance for staff navigating the process and managers in supporting current and prospective staff with disability.
  3. The Disability Travel Support Fund has been expanded to also support professional staff and HDR candidates, as well as academic staff. This Fund ensures that there are reduced barriers to research and career development activities for staff and HDR candidates with disability.
The ability to discuss workplace adjustments with my manager can, to put it simply, be the difference between me feeling safe to walk through the office doors every day or not. To those who may not require adjustments, I can appreciate that may sound exaggerated but having these discussions, admitting that you need help, is a highly vulnerable place to be in. To risk being perceived as unprofessional or difficult is something I’ve often worried about and has stopped me many times from asking what I need. To my own detriment.

Having a manager who is willing to listen, negotiate and come up with a viable solution means the absolute world. This flexibility allows me to compartmentalise my working week, making me a much calmer, productive staff member, but also gives me the ‘spoons’ to make meaningful connections with my colleagues.
